JOYCE CARTER VICKERY Joyce Edith Garrett Carter Vickery was born in Riverside, California on June 20, 1930 to Spencer and Estelle Garrett. She left us on October 15, 2010 after an extended battle with lymphoma and Alzheimer's disease. She spent her early years in her home town graduating from Riverside Polytechnic High School in 1947. After becoming engaged to Jackson B. Carter, also a native of Riverside, then an Army cadet at West Point, N.Y., she moved to New York City where she continued to be employed by AT&T though now in the Convertible Debentures Division. On her fiancee's graduation, they were married at West Point on June of 1954. During his career as an Air Force pilot, they lived in a number of states. Their first child, Jackson David Carter, was born in Greenville, Mississippi (1955); a second son, Daniel Garrett Carter, in Little Rock, Arkansas (1960); their last child, Elaine Dorothy Carter (now Shankar), at March Air Force Base (1965). In 1967, her husband, now Major Carter, was killed while serving as a bomber and transport pilot in the Vietnam War. Her surmounting of this personal tragedy was made possible, she always insisted, by the unflinching encouragement and emotional support of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Muriel ("Murry") Carter. A short time later she returned to school first at Riverside Community College and then at UCR from which she graduated with honors in 1974, having also spent two summer at the University of Guadalajara improving her command of Spanish. She was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society at UCR and awarded an NDEA Fellowship to pursue graduate study in history. While spending the next two years completing her M.A., she served as a student intern at the Riverside Municipal Museum which for some years contained an exhibit mounted by her. Here book on early Riverside history and its Mexican origins Defending Eden: New Mexican Pioneers in Southern California 1830-1890 was first published under the auspices of the Department of History at UCR and the Riverside Museum Press in 1977 and was reissued by the Press in 2007. In 1975 she married Professor John Vickery of UCR, himself a widower. During her second marriage, she raised her three children (David, Daniel, and Elaine) and her stepdaughter, Anne Elizabeth Vickery (now Floto); taught briefly at San Bernardino Valley College; and was employed on a part-time basis by the Riverside Public Library. For a number of years she also was active as a volunteer Mission Inn Docent. She enjoyed reading, gardening, and volunteer activities that supported local community projects. Her effervescent personality, a sympathetic and supportive nature, open and warm manner, and an inexhaustible curiosity about historical events, their causes, and results made her prized by her friends, respected by her numerous social and professional acquaintances, and deeply loved by her family, which includes her second husband, her children, six grandchildren (Kimberly, William, Kavi, Elina,Eric, and Sara Lucinda), and one great-grandson (Ryan). A Memorial Service honoring her life will be conducted by Acheson & Graham Mortuary, 7944 Magnolia Avenue, Riverside, at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010. God saw she was tired
So he put his arms around her and whispered, “Come with me.”
Although we loved her dearly, we could not make her stay here on earth.
